The picturesque bay of Kamala

Kamala Beach is a picturesque bay situated with turquoise waters on Phuket’s west coast, just a few minutes away from Patong Beach and Laem Sing Beach. Surrounded by lush green hills, the beach boasts soft white sand and clear waters during the high season.

Over the years, Kamala has become a popular destination for families, couples, retirees, and long-term visitors who come to bask and enjoy the tropical environment and stay in the hotels, villas, and apartment rentals around the area.

Kamala is mainly inhabited by a friendly Thai Muslim community, similar to the nearby coastal areas like Surin and Bangtao. Originally a small fishing village, Kamala’s local population was predominantly Muslim. Despite being only 9 km away from the bustling Patong, life here is peaceful, much like the rest of Thailand.

Calm and welcoming people, stunning sunsets over the sea, and a beautiful beach with clear water and powdery sand: are just some of the reasons that make picturesque Kamala an unforgettable place to stay.

This sandy beach is 2 km long and is lined with green coconut and Casuarina trees, providing pleasant shade for tourists. From November to April, the ocean is calm, offering great swimming conditions. Tourists can also explore the nearby coral reef. It’s truly a gem on Phuket Island. Kamala Beach is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket, and is a haven for travelers who prefer the quieter life.

Beach chairs are available on 10% of the beach for hire at 100 Baht. Most of them are situated in the middle and towards the southern end of the beach.

The bay’s northern end is home to luxurious resorts and popular beach clubs, making it a lively destination for those who love the vibrant life.

The central area of the beach, which is a popular spot for tourists, features many excellent beach restaurants that serve Thai and International cuisine at affordable prices. In addition, there are shopping options, beachfront massage, bars, and great hotels and apartments, some with direct beach access.

The southern end of the beach has a remote atmosphere. It’s similar to how Phuket was fifty years ago, with the presence of a small fishing village where fishermen impeccably preserve their nets and long-tailed boats. It’s not unusual to see local fishermen casting their nets.

During the low season, from May to October, Kamala Beach becomes very tranquil. At the same time, it has become a popular destination for surfers who enjoy riding waves that are almost 2 meters high. The northern end of the beach has a great reef break, which attracts many surfers, making it one of the best beaches for surfing in Phuket.

What to do in Kamala Beach

The area around Kamala is quite secluded, but it offers great places to visit if you are looking for something different. You will surely appreciate these beautiful places with a relaxed atmosphere. In addition, there are not many activities on the beach, except for jet skis and parasailing, which you will find during the high season.

In the southern part of the bay, there are two hidden beaches to visit, almost unknown by tourists: Rayee Beach and Hua Beach. It is recommended to visit these shallow beaches when the tide is high to access the waters. These places are tranquil and offer a laid-back and relaxed atmosphere.

Towards the northern end of the beach, from November to April is the best spot for snorkeling with fantastic marine life. Remember to bring your gear; otherwise, you can rent it from vendors along the beach.

Enjoy a 1-hour horseback ride along the shore of one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket. The best time for this activity is during the sunset, as it provides a great opportunity to capture stunning photos with the sun in the background.

There is a local and picturesque market held in the town twice a week, providing a great opportunity to connect with the locals. The Friday Market offers a variety of items including clothing, fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood, meat, spices, and authentic Thai street food. It’s an experience not to be missed. The market is open on Fridays from 3:30 pm to 11 pm.

Kamala Beach is home to the famous Phuket FantaSea, a vast cultural theme park that offers amazing evening shows inside the theater that you should not miss. The show is approximately 70 minutes in duration. Open on Tuesday, Friday & Sunday from 17:30 – 23:30.

Rent a long-tail boat on Kamala Beach to reach the beautiful Laem Sing Beach, the most pristine beach in Phuket. It is a 300-meter strip of white soft sand lined by a lush tropical jungle, dotted with giant boulders, and lapped by a cobalt-colored sea. This gem of Phuket is formed by the numerous rock formations that offer visitors one of the most beautiful places in all of Phuket to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and snorkeling.

A little further south of Kamala, approximately on top of a hillside direction Patong, is the very hidden ancient sculpture of Kuan Yak Kamala. It is a 10-meter-tall grey Buddhist statue that locals come to pray and give donations.

At the southern end of the beach, is the beautiful Kamala Temple, also known as Wat Bann Kamala. It is a local Buddhist temple where locals come to pray and make donations to the monks. It’s free entry, but note that visitors are not allowed to wear swimsuits inside the temple.

Sunbathing and reading a book is the best way to spend a relaxing day. Additionally, taking a nice walk on the shore is refreshing and beneficial for your health. The Kamala Viewpoint is worth a visit as it is the only spot where you can have a beautiful view of the entire Kamala Beach. Remember to bring your camera with you to take stunning photos.

Where to eat on Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach features many excellent Thai, European, and International restaurants with great reputations. Beach restaurants are the ones that attract the most travelers who love to enjoy quality food with great views of the ocean. They serve mainly delicious Thai dishes and refreshing drinks right on the beach. Prices remain competitive, which makes Kamala a great choice if you’re on a tight budget.

Those beach restaurants offer similar menus, but the only thing that distinguishes one place from the next is the difference in setting or service. Kamala is one of the few places in Phuket with such a great choice of “toes-in-the-sand” dining options right on the sand. It is a rare luxury in Phuket. In addition to beachfront dining, Kamala also hosts several high-quality restaurants close to the beach, with prices in line with the restaurant standards.

Where to stay on Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach offers a wide range of accommodations, from budget to luxury options, all providing excellent facilities. You can find affordable guesthouses and bungalows in the central area of Kamala. Additionally, there are numerous 4-star resorts with spacious swimming pools, well-appointed rooms, and beautiful tropical gardens that offer great value for money. For those seeking luxury, there are top-notch 5-star resorts with spas, private pool villas, and luxurious suites, albeit at slightly higher prices, especially during the high season.
